Colonel Peterson attended South Dakota State University and earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in civil engineering in 2001. He entered the Marine Corps by completing Officer Candidates School. He attended The Basic School in 2002 and graduated from Ground Supply Officer Course in 2003.

From 2003 to 2005 he was assigned to Transportation Support Battalion and Combat Service Support Battalion-1, 1st MLG. While with 1st MLG he deployed as an assistant and then Battalion Supply Officer in support of OIF I and II in Kuwait and Iraq.

From 2005 to 2008 he was assigned to 4th MLG in New Orleans, LA. After a successful tour as Aide-De-Camp he spent the remainder of his time as the G-3 Training Officer. He participated in numerous exercises in South Korea with USFK staff and coordinated the training of 4th MLG reserve units across the United States.

Following completion of resident Expeditionary Warfare School in Quantico VA in 2009 he reported to 1st LAR in Camp Pendleton, CA to serve as the Battalion Supply Officer. During this tour he deployed twice to Afghanistan, first as the Battalion Supply Officer and Combat Operations Center Watch Officer, then as the Police Advising Team OIC.

In 2012, he was selected on the Commandant’s Professional Intermediate-Level Education Board (CPIB) and slated to attend the Naval Postgraduate School (NPS). There, he earned a master’s degree in electrical engineering and graduated in December 2014.

Upon graduation from NPS he was assigned to Marine Corps Systems Command. He served as the Chief Engineer for the Energy Team from 2015 to 2018 and led efforts to improve operational reach of MAGTF units through more efficient utilization of energy across the battlefield.

In 2018, he was selected to become a Ground Acquisitions Officer and was assigned as the Team Lead for Information Related Capabilities where he served until 2020. In Feb, 2020, he was selected to become the Team Lead for the Corrosion Prevention and Control Team, a Critical Acquisition Position.

In 2021, he was selected to become the Product Manager for the Marine Corps’ Joint Light Tactical Vehicle Program Office where he lead one of the Marine Corps’ main Force Design modernization efforts and continued to serve there until he was selected to attend Top Level School in 2022.

After earning a master’s degree in National Resource Strategy at the Eisenhower School In June 2023, he began a tour as the Chief of Staff for Deputy Assistant Secretary of the Navy, Air and Ground Systems.

On 28 February 2024, Col Peterson assumed the duties of Director, Joint Intermediate Force Capabilities Office, Quantico, VA.
